Tours & Excursions : |
|
The variety of tours and excursions you can take in the Dominican Republic is unlimited. They range from relaxing sightseeing tours of the larger city's art, culture, and historical attractions, to active nature/eco-tourism trips that have you climbing Pico Duarte, the Caribbean's highest mountain at over 3000 meters (10,000 feet).
Tour Operators offering a variety of tours and excursions can be found in every tourism destination in the country. Most are quite reputable, have been in operation for years, and provide a good product.
When planning a vacation to the Dominican Republic we encourage a combination of near or far inner-island destinations for an active vacation. Now that there are more scheduled airline options available, this also aims to be of use to the independent traveler who may have time to see more of the country. Consider arriving at one side of the country and departing from another to explore the vast diversity of the Dominican Republic.
Among the most beautiful areas due to the concentration of hotels and resorts and the quality of the beaches are*:
1) Boca Chica & Juan Dolio (closest to the capital, Santo Domingo)
2) La Romana and Bayahibe
3) The East Coast. The most preferred destination. (Uvero Alto, Macao, Bavaro, El Cortecito, Cabeza de Toro, Punta Cana, CapCana and more)
4) Samana
5) The North Coast (Monte Cristo, La Isabela, Luperon, Cofresi, Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata, Sosua, Cabarete, Playa Grande, Cabrera).
*Some resorts carry the name of the area where they lay
Other inland tourist areas are:
1) Jarabacoa & Constanza (the geographical center, up in the Caribbean Alps, pine trees, river-rafting, canoeing, parapenting, mountain biking, quad-riding, horseback riding, mountain trekking, hiking, bird-watching, waterfalls, hanging bridges, cascades, …)
2) Barahona & Pedernales (Biodiversity, striking natural attractions, the largest lake, spectacular panoramic highway, mountain paradors, dry forests, archeological sites, pink flamingos, lazing American crocodiles, iguanas, magnetic hill, larimar, bird watching…)

You can easily find a room at one of the major resorts (four or five stars) for US$ 60 per day. Almost all the resorts offer the "all inclusive" policy which provides you with unlimited food at their restaurants as well as beverages in the discos and bars located throughout their compounds at an additional US$40 to US$60 per day per person depending on the hotel and season.
The bars feature tropical fruit juices and exotic cocktails and, of course, beer and national liquors. All the activities, except the motorized water sports for which there might be an extra charge, are part of the all inclusive programs as well as the night shows.
