he Dominican Republic is a
Spanish speaking country,as such, education in all public schools and universities and in most private ones, is only imparted in |
|
Spanish. Universities are the main training center of human resources in the country. In order to fulfill this goal they have available a wide range of offers concerning careers and professions, as well as curriculum models or study plans.
According to the Report on Higher Education in the Dominican Republic published by UNESCO and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, in the year 2002 there were in the country 35 universities and five institutions of higher technological education, with a number of approximately 286,134 enrolled students, of which 61.6% are women and 31.38% are men. The university population is in an evident growth process. In 1995 it grew 9.6% in relation to the previous year, 11.4% in 1999 and 32.4% in 2002.
In the year 2002, 75% of university students was between 17 and 25 years old, and only 6% was older than 40. In August 2002 the programs with larger number of students were, in descending order, education, law, marketing, accounting, computer engineering, management, medicine, psychology, industrial engineering and civil engineering. These concentrated 75.9% of the Dominican university population.
Graduate degrees have a special place in Dominican higher education and by July 2002 Dominican universities offered 343 masters and post grade degrees, 32% at public institutions and 68% at private ones. Worthy of particular attention is the fact that programs that until recently did not have a significant demand, are showing a growing trend, such as advertising and social communications, probably as a result of the protagonist role that the media and communication technologies play in modern society.
On the contrary, careers that traditionally have been considered as important both for the tradition of science and thought, and for the material and spiritual progress of the peoples, such as Basic Science (physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics), Philosophy, Sociology, Economy, History and Literature, among others, are in a declination process.
